That's easy, Rebel. You'll lose more weight with whichever exercise machine you will actually use on a long term basis!
I like the treadmill because I really, really want to run a 5K. I like the eliptical because it doesn't hurt my knees or my feet. Both burn the same number of calories (give or take a few) according to my heart rate monitor. Both have lots of features. You can use your upper and lower body on both. Elipticals are CHEAPER...
Good luck
Change your lifestyle. If you’re calling this a “diet,” then you’re going to gain all the weight back (and more) within a few months of losing it. Diets do not work. Diets are temporary. When you change your dietary lifestyle, however, you’re changing your habits – and you’re putting yourself on track for long-term / continued success and weight maintenance. Don’t ever tell anybody you’re on a diet – ever. I’m speaking from experience, here – a reformed low-carber. Worked out well for a while, but ultimately failed because my entire lifestyle didn’t change (permanently).

You'll lose more weight on the piece of equipment you use.
The only thing I'd add is this. If you are simply looking to burn some fat, it won't really matter. If you are training to run, use the treadmill. An elliptical mimics the stride of running, but doesn't train the muscles as well. I used the elliptical religiously training to run my 1 1/2 mile fitness test, and after several months, my run time didn't change at all. I had more cardiovascular endurance, but my leg muscles hadn't gained any muscular endurance.
The most effective way to burn fat is to eat less food and exercise more often, the problems appear when we in reality aim to put that into practice! There are plenty of temptations in the real world don't you think?! I learned some splendid advice by checking out the web resource in the box below, they have plenty of guidance, I worked off 8 pounds by following their tips.

I think elliptical are mainly for less impact exercises and not as hard on your joints as a treadmill.
For a really intense exercise do incline treadmill jogging and try not to fall off.
Either one can provide an excellent fat burning workout. As to which is better, there are two factors that determine how many calories you will burn in a given session: Intensity (how hard you work) and duration (How long you work). Regardless of the machine you use, these two factors are inversely related: You can go hard for a short time or at a leisurely pace for a longer time but you can't do both........or can you? The best workouts for weight loss appear to be intervals. On the treadmill for instance, you might walk at 3.7 mph for one minute and then 2.5 for 2 minutes and repeat until you've completed 30 minutes. Obviously this can be done on either machine. The advantage to the elliptical is there is no impact i.e. your feet stay flat which helps if you have shin splints or pain in your arches, however, the treadmill set to an incline (alternating the speed) will burn the most fat and targets the glutes (butt) thighs and calves. I recommend putting the incline up as high as is still comfortable. 10% incline makes a huge difference but it is important that you not use the hand rails as this defeats the purpose of the incline and you will not burn nearly as much fat.
So go with the treadmill, and do intervals on an incline. Good luck.
