The average person has about 12 dreams per night but can only remember a couple, if any. I read that in a psychology book 4 years ago in highschool... but unno the name. For some reason the fact stuck with me.

You aren't remembering the dreams. Everyone dreams.Have you moved your bed?Having your head to the North will help you to dream. Before you go to sleep tell yourself you will recall your dreams. Keep a pencil and paper by the bed so when you awaken you can write down your dreams.

Yes everyone dreams when asleep - it is part of the sleep cycle - most people don't remember their dreams but they are always there. Sleep studies done on people have confirmed that while our thought patterns are different went sleeping there is still plenty of mental activity (ie dreams) going on

I remember a few things from a few years ago in my psychobiology class when we covered dreaming really briefly. Everyone is correct when they say you do dream. But there are a few things that will help you remember. One is to get longer and more restful dreams. For the last year or so I've been having the most intense and vivid dreams ever. But they only seem to happen when I have really restful nights. Also the more sleep you get, the more cycles you'll go through of entering in and out of the REM sleep. The more dreams, the more likely you'll remember one of them. And then another suggestion is to will yourself to remember your dreams. It takes practice and lots of repetition. But its been working for my girlfriend who also never remembers her dreams. But that lead to her recently remembering a dream of tornadoes swooping down on her as she is driving down a country lane in England... Goodluck trying to remember!

During sleep everybody enters REM, the dream stage. Dreams are also very short in duration, not more than a couple minutes at most, and for the most part are not remembered when you wake up. See, memory and recall require conscious effort on your part, and since you are asleep- you are not choosing to do that. So far as your brain is concerned, you aren't really paying attention to what's going on, and have no need to remember it. So you don't. You are more likely to be able to recall a dream on the odd occasion if you are motivated to do so, or if it involves something you are upset or have an emotional response to. Truthfully, the dream state is still one that researchers don't have a lot of clear information about. While we can detect REM sleep with an EEG, we can't necessarily detect when exactly you are dreaming or what you are dreaming about. You don't dream all the time, even in REM sleep stage, either. While there are rare individuals who evidently don't dream, it's usually due to a brain lesion. Even they still experience REM sleep, just not dreams, but they remain otherwise healthy. Nobody knows why we dream, exactly. We just know that we do, and that about 95-99% of the time, we don't remember any of it. If I were going to hazard a guess, I'd guess you do experience dreams, and don't recall them for whatever reason. It may also be that you are a bit stressed over your sleep habits of late, or stressed in general- and that also has an influence on things. There is some evidence that we do indeed block recall of dreams that upset us, when we simply don't want to deal with the issue involved. At any rate, you likely do dream. And you might have better luck if you deal with the insomnia issue, and the underlying stress causing that. Then you might have better luck recalling the dreams. Or not, and if not, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
