Question about a Root canal?

Ok here my question. i have a filling that is close to the nerve. like 6 years ago they said i MIGHT need a root canal but instead they were gonna try to save the tooth, which they did save it! So what i wanna know is, am i gonna need a root canal down the road? i haven't experience any pain on that tooth and been like 6 years. so it is possible that tooth is gonna need a root canal in the future or i can prevent that for life, if i keep taking care of it?

Please my question honestly. Just a thought i been having in my mind lately
