If you exercise too much can you put your body into "starvation mode"?

I am trying to lose weight by eating 1800 calories a day in six 300 calorie increments. However after you subtract the moderate exercise I do just by going to school, running errands, playing with my kids, and stuff I'm only managing to pull in just under 1200 gross. Is that going to make my body think it's starving and hold onto fat? Should I eat more, or just stay where I am?

Thanks for your help : )

Hi mate,

First off - big mistake neglecting your legs. Skateboarding won't develop much in the way of muscles. If you want to give bodybuilding any sort of a go, you should train your legs, since half your body's muscle mass is in your legs.

Simple routine might be:

Monday: Chest/tris
- Dumbell bench press 5 sets (12,8,8,6,6) - increasing weight
- Dumbell flyes 3 sets (12,12,12)
- Skull crushers (12,8,8,6,6) - increasing weight
- Kickbacks (12,10,10)

Tuesday: Abs
- Crunches 4 sets to failure
- Bicycle 4 sets to failure

Wednesday: Legs
- Dumbell Squats (12,8,8,6,6) - increasing weight
- Lunges (8,8,6,6) - increasing weight
- Calf raise (15,15,15,15)

Thursday: Abs
- Leg raises 4 sets to failure
- Oblique twists 4 sets to failure

Friday: Back & Biceps
- Deadlifts (12,8,8,6,6) - increasing weight
- Rows (8,8,6,6)
- Dumbbell curls (12,8,8,6,6)
- 21s (2 drop sets)

Saturday/Sunday: rest

Try that for 6-8 weeks, have a week off and evaluate.

Hope that helps.

No leg workout? Unheard of! JK. You should not neglect your legs. Skateboarding is not nearly enough tho it seems fun. Dumbells are also fun but make sure to find a gym nearby if you want better results( or buy a few more pieces of equipment for home) and favor compound exercises.
Your most important ally is nutrition. No mater how much you lift if you don’t eat appropriately you simply will not gain muscle. Protein is your best friend from now on. The more you eat and lift the bigger you will get.
Try paleo eating here is an awesome book that should get you started. "The paleo diet" by Loren Cordain.
Also, don’t neglect your water intake and your sleep! I can not stress enough how these will impact your training.

Good luck and stay strong.
