Am I experiencing withdrawal from Morphine or Benadryl?
I've been prescribed high dosages of pain meds the last 3 years. October 2009 I was up to 300 mg a day of Morphine. This was a combination if time released and immediate release for break through pain. April of 2009 I started having a constant histamine reaction that seemed to be from the Morphine but my doctor didn't think it was the cause since I had been on the drug for 2 years prior to this. That said I did have a histamine reaction the first 6 months or so I was prescribed these medications. It's one of the reasons my prescription was changed several times. I didn't have insurance or money to go to another doctor and was in to much pain to not take the morphine so I started taking Benadryl. It reduced but didn't stop the itching. In October fed up with the itching and sure it was caused by the Morphine I tried to stop taking it. I managed to cut back to 60mg. The itching was still bad even with the reduced amount and taking Bendadry daily. In May I finally convinced one of my doctors assistants the the itching was the morphine and during the last 2 months I changed pain meds twice. First to Oxycodone. The physician's assistant said that Oxycodone is twice as strong as Morphine so I was prescribed 2 - 15 mg pills a day. I itched much worse and had less pain relief. The 2nd change was to Hydromorphone (generic for dilaudid). Much better, my itching is gone for the first time in over a year and it helps some with my pain so I stopped the Benadryl. Now I feel really sick. Constant headache, upset stomach and body aches. I've been switched between narcotics before, first Percocet, then Oxycontin, then Dilaudid, then Oxycodone, then eventually Morphine and never had a withdrawal problem. I assume since they are all Opiates my body didn't notice the change. So I'm wondering if I need to cut back slowly on the Benadryl instead of all at once. Also I'm taking 3 - 4mg dilauded a day instead of 2 - 30 mg morphine tablets a day. I'm not sure how the dosages compare.
